Prof.Dr.STELLA VETTORI - SOUTH AFRICA

A Legal Assessment of Provisions Dealing with Equality and Discrimination in the Employment Equity Amendment Bill 2010 of South Africa

Professor Stella Vettori was born in Johannesburg. In 1983, she obtained her BA degree, and in 1985, her LLB, both from University of the Witwatersrand. In 1993, she obtained her Master of Laws degree from University of South Africa. She was awarded the Spoor and Fisher Prize for the best Master’s dissertation. In 2005, she obtained her doctorate from the University of Pretoria for a thesis on alternative means to regulate the employment relationship in the changing world of work.
Some may consider her entry into academia at the age of 37 as a senior lecturer in the Department of Mercantile Law at the University of Pretoria as a late start. However, prior to that, Stella was involved in labour law training. As a result of the increased demand between 1996 and 2000 for training in labour law, directly as a result of the promulgation of a slew of labour legislation, notably the Labour Relations Act 66 of 1995, the Basic Conditions of Employment Act 75 of 1997, the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998, and the Skills Development Act 97 of 1998, she was a consultant to FSA Contact (now a division of Price Waterhouse Coopers) and the Institute of People Management.
Stella has presented papers at numerous international conferences, including as keynote speaker. In 2009 she chaired the organization committee of a highly successful international conference on corporate social responsibility.
Stella has published extensively both locally and abroad. Her book, The Employment Contract and the Changed World of Work, was published in 2007 in the United Kingdom. She also is the editor of a book  (Ageing Populations and Changing Labour Markets Gower 2010) where she wrote the introductory and concluding chapters). For this book she assembled a collection of expert writers on the social, cultural, political, and economic factors that have implications both for labour markets and the well-being of older people in developed and developing countries.
She is an accredited National Research Foundation Researcher.
Stella is also a practising advocate at the Johannesburg Bar. She has door chambers at the prestigious Maisels group where she specialises in labour mediations and arbitrations.
